Many of these people don't know or don't care what country they live
in. They cross the borders as they please. The climate up in the hills
is colder and dryer than it is elsewhere in the region (which is
tropical), making it ideal for growing opium. Thus the majority of the
world's opium comes from this region (the corner where Burma, Laos,
Cambodia and Thailand meet), often referred to as the "Golden Triangle".
