 We went in
style; it was the only portion of my 10 month trip where I rode in a
car. We rented one in Auckland, on the North Island, and dropped it off
in Christchurch, on the South Island (you take the car ferry).
It was also the only portion of my trip where the weather was not balmy. So we were unprepared for temperatures in the 40s or 50s. The other thing we weren't prepared for was how the water was so green. It was the same bright hue as most oceans, but green. The emerald rivers and jewellike clear lakes blew us away. You can't quite see the color of the water from this photo, but you can see how clear it is.
